The All-Star game starters have generally been winners of a popularity contest. It’s more about reputation sometimes than production in a given season. Doesn’t matter which sport it is.
To any and all Sixers fans, and straight up Allen Iverson supporters out there, let’s join together for a common cause:
Elect A.I. to the All-Star Game!
Let's send A.I. out an All-Star starter.
The first wave of balloting has come out and Iverson is sixth in the East among guards with136,976 votes. The last two digits must be an omen.
He trails the following:
Dwyane Wade (Mia) 672,227; Vince Carter (Orl) 292,002; Gilbert Arenas (Was) 212,526; Ray Allen (Bos) 208,276; and Derrick Rose (Chi) 196,059.
Wade is out of reach and rightly so. However, who among the other four guards is out of reach or someone who will make the All-Star game more entertaining? Seriously, A.I. is only 155,026 votes behind Vince Carter.
Look, we’re not saying for one second that A.I. has earned being a starter on the court this season. He hasn’t.
However, for a man who has dazzled during an incredible 14-year NBA career and who will go down in history as the best little guy to ever lace his shoes and run the hardwood courts like every game was his last, he deserves one more magical night among the stars of this league. Imagine him, Lebron, Wade, Shaq and K.G. starting for the East in Dallas.
We, the fans, can make this happen. And we must. For all Iverson has given us in entertainment value, we can repay him with this honor one more time.
